secret weapons

Is it worth the 164 MB download? I'll get to that.

The fan reaction to Road to Rome was less than stellar, since nobody really played it on any of my favorite smacktardless servers. However I have a feeling that Secret Weapons of WWII will take off like one of those fancy new Goblin jet fighters.

The wintery "Hellendoorn" map that comes with the demo is a great design, providing many routes of attack for each of the control points. None of the bases are static.

The majority of the infantry weapons are different. The vehicles are different, and provide a great variety. You can now ride shotgun manning a machinegun on the new jeep and motorcylce. You can use a jet pack, which I saw some team members doing. One of the bases has a guided missle that you can control when launched. The only beef I really had was the area with the four V2 rockets on launch pads - why not let us launch those?

Unfortunately, the Jetpack is a kit hidden somewhere on the map, and I have already been witness to the massive amount of TKing/camping that will be going on. Maybe it was a poor decision on the part of dice to make something that gimmicky so limited. Still, I'm sure some issues like that will be tweaked for the final release this September. I'd hate for the purpose of the game be lost underneath some stupid competition for the cool new vehicles.

So is it worth the download? If you're a fan of Battlefield 1942, I'd say go for it. But I'd still recommend waiting for the full version, because to be honest, the massive amount of smacktarding going on can make it a little frustrating to play.

The downloadable demo of Secret Weapons of WWII is very playable, but I could see how it could become a campers' paradise. Mounted machine guns on the bell tower and the bunkers would make me see red in multiplayer - thankfully the single player AI isn't clever enough to camp out there. The only downside thus far is that I have to play the game on 1024x768x16 on low resolution on my 1.4 GHz Athalon to prevent it from stalling - the first inklings that I'll have to start thinking about upgrading.

On a side note: The goat said "Are you Threatening me?". Damn. A Warcraft III reference. That goat is The Shit.

Indirectly it is a WC3 reference. You see, the Great Cornholio was the first to utter that phrase.

I hope you know what I'm talking about, or I'll have to get my dagger +9/ogre slaying.

I really enjoyed the Secret Weapons demo. Even though there are a lot of crazy new weapons and contraptions, it appears that the level design, at least on the demo map, is much better than previous releases. The variety in terrain as well as the amphibious vehicles gives easy access to just about all control points, and then there are subtle improvements such as the fact that the bridges no longer damage your vehicle slightly when you drive over it.

The jetpack, which I was really worried about, is fairly reasonable. It doesn't make you invincable by any means, rather most inexperienced players will be a hazard to themselves when wearing one.

I'll definitely buy the expansion, it looks like a winner.
